  • Cutting Calories May Be Key To Evolutionary Fitness
Charles Darwin and his contemporaries postulated that food consumption in birds and mammals was limited by resource levels, that is, animals would eat as much as they could while food was plentiful and produce as many offspring as this would allow them to. However, recent research has shown that, even when food is abundant, energy intake reaches a limit, even in animals with high nutrient demands, such as lactating females.

Natural Hygiene Diet

Background
The natural hygiene movement started as far back as 1850 and grew a following quickly who wanted to either lose weight or as a way to stay healthy. The diet’s primary focus surrounds what you eat. If you eat certain combinations you will be healthy however if you incorrectly combine your foods you will be unhealthy. Those who support natural hygiene diet view modern medicine as poison and believe simply the correct balance of a diet will provide proper health.

What to Eat
Food is very specific in this diet where what you can and cannot eat can be the difference of being healthy and unhealthy. Restrictions such as only fruit may be eaten before noon is common and the fruits cannot be mixed with other nutrients like proteins. The diet focus is on the balance of what you eat and requires learning what can and cannot be mixed in one meal.

The Good
Focuses on eating healthy as a means to lose weight and live a healthy life. Balance of the different food groups allows you to have a good range in your selections in what you eat as long as you maintain the proper mixture of the groups. There is also many reference materials available online and in print.

The Bad
Very restrictive which requires each meal to be planned out in advance. They also reject modern medicine depending solely on consumption for health.

Exercise
The diet focuses on consumption, not exercise.

Edenic Diet

Background
Named after the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden, this diet focuses on eating only natural foods that would be available without human intervention (no processing), combining the eating practice with spiritual guiding in a way that helps dieters not only change the way they eat but also make everyday choices that are better for them and do not contradict God's laws.

What to Eat
Only natural, non-processed foods. Dieters are told to choose only items that would have originally been available at the Garden of Eden, such as fruits.

The Good
The spiritual component of the diet would probably help many dieters stay motivated and give them a base in which to focus. Fruits and vegetables are essential to the diet, which means the nutritional content of the program is sound. No processed foods means less sugars and fats, which could help prevent certain diseases directly related to diet, like high cholesterol and diabetes.

The Bad
Not only is this a strict diet, but the lack of information provided in the Bible regarding what Adam and Eve actually ate makes it improbable that dieters would actually be eating the same. Moreover, since there is no protein or carbohydrate (whole grains) intake in this diet, some dieters may experience nutritional deficiencies, unless they choose to stray from the diet and take supplements.

Fruitarian Diet

Background
By focusing on eating natural foods like fruits and, to a small degree, vegetables, dieters will lose weight by avoiding extra calories and chemicals found in processed foods.

What to Eat
The general guidelines the Fruitarian diet follows is that seventy five percent of your daily calories should come from fruit, with the remaining coming from vegetables. No other food items are allowed.

The Good
Eating all of the fruit you can handle does not sound too bad. If grown locally, it will also have the added advantage of being fresh and not have many of the chemicals commonly applied when grown commercially. Fruit will promote weight loss and in the end dieters will end up losing weight and keeping it off if they can stick tightly to the guidelines.

The Bad
Most fruits bought will be commercially grown, which means they contain a good amount of sugar and have been exposed to pesticides in the growing process. The limitation of only fruit also denies the body important nutrients it needs to maintain health and normal function.

Exercise
Fruitarian diet focuses on consumption, not exercise, to help with weight loss.
